Summer is the time of the year when there is an abundance of popsicle sticks and if you want to turn those into a learning activity then why make this Ice Cream Color Sorting Activity.
While we did use the store bought jumbo craft sticks, the ice cream sticks work out just as well, especially the bigger ones.
This is a color activity for toddlers and even preschoolers that will help them out with color recognition as well as offer a good fine motor practice as they push the popsicle sticks inside the paper ice creams.
We’ve even got a handy ice cream template you can use to make this colors learning activity just like we did.
When all is put together have your kids sort the colors, pushing the correct craft stick into the matching popsicle.
Preparation
To prepare this color matching activity you will need
- cardstock in variety of colors
- acrylic / craft paint in variety of colors
- craft sticks or popsicle sticks
- scissors
- glue
- brushes
- activity template – you will find it at the end of the tutorial
You can print out our ice cream template to use as a stencil or make your own.
Trace around the template on colored cardstock.
Cut out the shape.
Fold the ice cream shape in half.
Open it up again and apply glue on the edges of one half – making a letter U with the glue – not applying the glue on the bottom part of the ice cream half.
Fold in half again and press for the glue to set.
Take the craft stick and paint it. You can paint the whole craft stick or just one side, whichever way feels nicer to you.
Make the others in the same way.
Wait for the paint and glue to dry and the ice cream color sorting activity is ready for your toddler or preschooler.
